About Cleo
Cleo Grater (born March 1996) is a fine art photographer currently based out of Mesa, Arizona. Originally from Tucson, Arizona, she grew up in Massachusetts and has developed an appreciation for different environments whether that be the driest of the deserts or the vibrant colors of the Northeast. She captures everyday moments that reveal how significant the ordinary can be. Her most recent body of work is primarily focused on the Phoenix urban landscape and was the subject of her BFA exhibition show at ASU’s Gallery 100 in Tempe, AZ. She captures the landscape (just southeast of Phoenix) as documentation of her mother’s childhood. Each landscape represents a significant event/time in her mother’s youth and are accompanied by journal entries from her mother herself. The journal entries show the audience detailed memories that happened during that time from her mother’s point of view. As an enlightening experience, both personally and academically, this body of work has influenced Grater to pursue a similar project based on her father’s life in the near future. Grater has received her BFA in Photography from Arizona State University in 2019.
“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.” - Robert Frank
